We are always delighted to welcome new helping hands to our team. This year, Ne\u017ea and Matev\u017e joined us and successfully completed their Wild Water Rescue training, taking an important step toward working safely and effectively on whitewater rivers. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Many people assume that the job of a river rescue technician is mainly about sitting in a raft and keeping an eye on guests during a river trip. In reality, however, the role requires extensive knowledge, practice, and countless hours of training. A rescue technician must know the river, understand water dynamics, be able to assist a casualty, and make quick, sound decisions in high-pressure situations. That is why Ne\u017ea and Matev\u017e undertook an intensive training program in the So\u010da Valley. <\/p>\n

The training began in the classroom. The first day was dedicated to theory, as safe and effective rescue operations are impossible without a solid understanding of the river environment. The two trainees learned the fundamentals of hydrology, the hazards associated with whitewater environments, the organization of rescue operations, and the procedures for responding to a variety of emergency situations. A strong emphasis was also placed on accident prevention, as the most important aspect of river safety is ensuring that rescue situations never arise in the first place. <\/p>\n

The following morning, the training moved to the river. The So\u010da is renowned for its striking emerald-green waters, as well as its cold temperatures. To ensure they could train safely and as comfortably as possible in the water, Ne\u017ea and Matev\u017e suited up in the thickest wetsuits they could find. <\/p>\n

The first practical day was primarily focused on getting to know the river. They practiced swimming in the current and crossing the river, learning proper body positioning, movement in fast water, and efficient ways to navigate the flow. For many, this is the day that brings the biggest surprises. The water is cold, the current is strong, and fatigue sets in faster than expected. <\/p>\n

The following days followed a steady rhythm. Mornings were dedicated to learning and reinforcing theoretical knowledge on land, while afternoons were reserved for practical work on the water. Each morning, they practiced tying essential knots and setting up priority systems that enable safe and efficient rescues in challenging conditions. In whitewater rescue, there is no room for guesswork, which is why procedures must be carried out quickly, precisely, and without error. <\/p>\n

In the afternoons, training focused on throwing rescue lines, contact rescues, and advanced rescue systems in a variety of river scenarios. With each passing day, they developed a deeper understanding of how essential teamwork and clear communication are. <\/p>\n

The fifth day brought one of the most engaging parts of the training \u2013 night-time water rescue exercises. Once darkness falls, orientation becomes significantly more challenging. Visibility is reduced, and communication is more demanding. For this reason, the trainees had to rely on whistle signals and waterproof lights to guide their partners and maintain contact during rescue operations. Such exercises are crucial, as accidents do not choose the time of day or weather conditions. A rescuer must be prepared to respond during the day or night, in rain or cold conditions alike. <\/p>\n

After a week of intensive training, it was time for final preparations. The day before the exam, Ne\u017ea and Matev\u017e once again thoroughly reviewed all theoretical content, practiced all essential knots, and went over the operation of priority systems. <\/p>\n

The eighth day was dedicated to an assessment in front of an examination panel. The trainees had to demonstrate both theoretical and practical knowledge\u2014from understanding the river and safety procedures to the correct use of equipment and the execution of various rescue techniques. After seven intensive days of learning, training, and testing, they successfully completed all tasks and earned the title of whitewater rescue technician. <\/p>\n

In doing so, they proved they are ready to take on the responsibility that comes with working on whitewater rivers. Many more river miles and new experiences lie ahead of them, but the first important milestone is now successfully behind them. We look forward to you meeting them on your next rafting adventure. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n
